Helpful Moving And Relocating Tips

By Joyce McIntosh

Even if you are moving into a fantastic new home or heading to a new life in a completely new state or city, chances are the whole process of moving is causing you some extra stress. While this is normal, there are definitely ways to make the entire process much easier.

Organization is key and one way to stay organized and focused is by creating a comprehensive list of all the tasks you need to accomplish. Place the tasks in various categories, such as one with the heading of "Utilities." This will include items such as turning off electricity, gas, water, trash and cable at the old address and starting up all of these services at specific date at your new address.

Other sections include a list of whom will need your change of address information. This includes credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, schools, doctor's offices, veterinarian's offices and much more. If you are moving far away, consider listing medical-related tasks such as transferring prescriptions or having copies of medical records created.

Packing is a big chore, and it is wise to consider beginning this process as soon as possible. Ask friends and neighbors for their extra newspapers to use for wrapping and look on Craigslist or Freecycle to find free boxes to cut costs. Begin by packing and carefully labeling items that you do not use often, such as holiday decorations and extra blankets and sheets. Pictures, books, decorative items and memorabilia also can be among the first items packed up. This is also a great time for purging your old items, and so be sure to weed out belongings you really don't need and drive them to a thrift store or arrange to have a charity truck pick the items up.

One common moving headache occurs when the date you have to leave your home does not correspond with the date when you are able to move in to the new home. Moving companies usually will store your belongings for weeks or months, but at an exorbitant cost. It can be far cheaper to simply keep your items at a Bath mini storage facility or perhaps an East Lansing mini storage unit. You will want to find a storage company that allows you to pay by the month and possibly also by the week. After all, if you have to wait six weeks before your moving date, why pay for two months if you can pay for just six weeks?

Be sure to select a storage facility that doesn't require a security deposit and also a mini storage company that allows 24/7 access in case you need to get something out of storage. The facility should be fully lit and fenced with security monitoring, as well. Some companies even offer discounts if you are a senior citizen, military personnel or a student, so be sure to take advantage of these cost-cutting extras.
