Leaking Hot Water Heater-Why?

By Carol Richardson

It is inconvenient to have a leaking water heater down in your basement for a long time. You may end up mopping your floors frequently or experience unnecessary disasters that can put your life on the line. Below are some of the reasons why your heating system continues to leak.

Avoid major accidents by shutting down the heating source and the cold water valve of the heater before carrying out repairs. If you think you cannot handle repairing your unit on your own, contact a specialist immediately.

Water can easily leak if your plumbing connections are loosely joined. Tighten the fittings with a wrench or replace them if they are badly damaged. Look for rust stains around the unit to know the source of the leaks. It helps using a Teflon tape or sealant to make it difficult for water to leak out.

It is also possible that the temperature inside the tank is set too high. Adjust the thermostat settings not more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not set the temperature lower than 120 degrees to prevent the growth of bacteria inside the tank. Doing this minimizes the relief valve from releasing pressure and water at the same time.

If you have a faulty valve, there is a tendency for it to leak more often. Test its handle and allow it to snap back on its own to observe the water flow. Replace the valve once water continues to leak.

It is safe to assume that the internal tank has corroded once you see water puddles near the base of the unit. Sediments may have been left inside for a long time, causing the tank lining to rust and deteriorate. Consider buying a replacement unit once this happens. Drain and flush your tank regularly to minimize the sediment buildup.

If you live within an area of a colder climate, your water heater can leak more often due to condensation. This happens when cold water enters the tank filled with warm water. Wait for a couple of minutes since water will stop leaking as soon as the unit starts heating water.

If the water continues to leak even after performing simple repairs, contact a water heater specialist for help. Not having the right tools in repairing a water heater is dangerous since it can pose serious dangers to you and your family.
