Drain Cleaning Keeps Home Pipes Functioning Correctly

By Susan Kaempfer

Although slow moving drains are annoying to a home occupant, they are a signal that something needs to be done. These pipes are in the process of forming a complete clog, blocking the waste water from leaving the home and resulting in backups. Drain cleaning can prevent the problem from happening.

One of the mistakes that can cause trouble in one's kitchen is disposing of cooking grease in the sink. No amount of hot water can wash the fat down the sink without it solidifying and coating the sides of the pipe. It attracts other particles and eventually slows the draining until a plug is formed. The homeowner may then need a plumber's help in order to clean the line of accumulations.

In the tub or shower problems are often due to hair. Over time, hair builds up in drains and collects soaps and other materials to the point the shower is barely draining. When operating properly, one should never be standing in water when showering. Installing a screen may prevent the problem from developing.

Toilets may be plugged with paper in the line. Sometimes, these plugs dissolve and the clog goes away. A more immediate solution is to use a plunger. If all else fail, call a plumber who can remove the toilet to access the line.

When several fixtures are having problems the clog may be in the main line. This can be from many different causes. Sometimes, very thin tree roots grow through the line and eventually block the flow. Plumbers use a rooter to cut through the clog.

Drain cleaning ensures the plumbing works correctly. No matter what fixture is experiencing problems, plumbers can help. Homeowners help by limiting what goes down the pipe.
