Visiting South America Vacation Destinations

By Taylor Reaume

South America vacation destinations are growing in popularity for a variety of reasons. The major destinations are a relatively short plane flight from U. S. Departure points. The weather is reversed from Northern Hemisphere climate, so you can enjoy your preferred weather year around. The vast number of different ecological zones provides variety and often the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Here are a few holiday spots that may be of interest to travelers from North America or Europe.

The wide range of holiday activities in the Southern Hemisphere Americas is a draw. There are surfing opportunities along the coastline of Chile and Ecuador. There are architectural examples with the historical complexes of ancient Indian cultures, plus the colonial influences of Italy, France and Spain. You can party to your heart's content with tourists from around the world who came to celebrate feast days. Urban shopping opportunities abound, or you might prefer to find a must-have item in a local market.

The vast expanses of Brazil serve to bring many travelers to the country. The Amazon River flows through millions of acres and has long been a destination point for ecologists, bird watchers and others who want to see wild animal species on location. At the other end of the activities continuum is celebrating Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. This annual spring rite brings millions of people into the area to celebrate parades, dancing and more in the streets of the city.

Ecuador as a holiday spot or retirement spot is a good choice for many people from the Northern Hemisphere. Those interested in an adventure style holiday should look at the 13-island group known as the Galapagos. Although located about six hundred miles off the coast, Ecuador makes a good jumping off point. Visitors can be guided to places where the wildlife can be closely approached.

Argentina is another vast country in this continent. It has many opportunities to enjoy an amazing vacation. Iguazu Falls is a "must see" for visitors. Many visitors consider this waterfall much more impressive than Niagara. If you prefer an urban environment, pay a visit to Buenos Aires where the atmosphere is much like that of Paris, France. The locals and tourists enjoy a coffee at one of the sidewalk cafe and watch passersby.

With over 3000 miles of coastline, you would be assured of finding Chile vacation activities linked to water. There are miles of beaches with opportunities to swim, dive, snorkel and surf to your heart's content. Santiago, with its Mediterranean climate provides a selection of aromatic wines, distinctive handicrafts and appetizing cuisines to enjoy. Wandering through the architecturally exciting streets is enough activity for many vacationers.

In terms of stability, Uruguay is an excellent example. There are many things to draw visitors to the country. The Plaza de Torres in Colonia del Sacramento is one example of architectural designs of interest culturally and historically. In Montevideo, visitors can view examples of Spain and Italy with the architecture.

Choose from several of these South America vacation destinations to enjoy a variety of activities. Alternatively, you may want to focus on a single location and learn it more completely. If you have a lengthy time to vacation, pick a language school location and learn while you visit the area.
