How to Keep Your Diamond Affixed to its Mounting

By Margot Liu

Among the best events in a woman's life is that romantic evening when her special gentleman presents her with the best of unique engagement rings. The engagement ring is a concrete proof that her special man desires to live with her for life. It's a testament that he loves her very much. In the lady's case, accepting the ring states her agreement to the guy's wish to love and treasure her always and forever.

No doubt that a unique engagement rings is an exceedingly special item. And just like taking care of a relationship, it is very important take good care of the jewellery item. Even if the sentimental value is not included, an engagement ring is still a substantial investment that required a lot of the gentleman's time, effort, and money.

Thus, you can just imagine one's headache if the diamond, the heart of the diamond ring, gets lost. Worse, wearers don't notice the loss, and people do not realize that one or several of the gemstones are lost until it is too late. Rings that are inlaid with small gems are usually the "victims" of such loss. However, diamonds affixed on other sorts of mounts are at risk. Pave-set diamonds can easily drop off. Invisible-set diamond jewelry can also fall because the invisible-set setting doesn't hold the stones solidly. Strong channel settings can fail, particularly if the mount is damaged.

What's to blame of the loss? There are many. The gemstones may be come loose when wearers hit their rings on hard objects. The stones may drop off if their mounting wears off or gets broken. The glue holding holding the diamonds may lose its adhesive power.

Because an engagement ring has high sentimental and fiscal value, it is only smart in order that they are securely attached to the mounts at all times. How will you do this?

1. Touch the gem on your ring. A slight move signifies that you need to have the mounting fixed by a professional jeweller.

2. Examine the prongs and mounting installation. If the mount is worn, damaged, or bent, there is a chance that the diamond will be dislodged. It's also wise to keep in mind that settings, prongs, and mountings that are created from softer metal such as silver or gold can be damaged easily. Have the ring mended if you notice any damage.

3. Never put on your diamond ring if you're doing physical activities such as washing your auto, carrying heavy things, or playing in a sport activity. Vigorous motions can cause the stones to loosen up from their mounting.

4. Do not wear the diamond ring if you are about to handle chemicals, household products, and detergents. Elements in these substances can damage the setting as well as weaken the glue that holds the diamond to its mounting. You should never wear your ring in the pool or out in the sea. Chlorine and salt water, respectively, can weaken the glue.

5. Make it a point to clean your ring on a regular basis since dirt can in fact weaken the glue. If you want to use ultrasonic cleaners, ensure that you check the stone after the cleaning process. Powerful ultrasonic vibrations can knock off the stone.
