What A Tummy Tuck Procedure Involves

By Bernard Miner

An abdominoplasty is sometimes referred to as a 'tummy tuck', which is a name that better describes this surgical procedure. The surgery ensures that excess skin and fat is removed from the lower and mid-abdominal area of the body, which may have been caused by major weight loss or pregnancy. It gets rid of loose or sagging skin, and tightens the muscles and fascia of the abdominal wall.

A person may require the procedure if their middle area is now too large for their body size. The abdomen of a person in need of the surgery will be protruding, and the skin will be sagging. Since the procedure tightens muscles, those with weak or separated muscles in this area of the body may benefit as well.

Before deciding upon the procedure, all details should be discussed with your doctor. The doctor should also recommend which type of surgery will best fit your circumstance. Various questions may be asked, as the doctor will need to know things like if you plan to lose more weight in the future.

Before this type of surgery can be recommended, an examination of the patient should occur. This observation will allow the doctor to determine how much excess skin and/or fat needs to be removed. It will also help the doctor determine which type of procedure will be best.

Two main incisions are made during the surgery. The first is from one hip to the other, in the pubic region, while the second is to detach the belly button from the skin. The skin attached to the abdominal wall is then separated, so that the surgeon can work on the fascia and muscles that require tightening.

Now the surgeon will work on the area revealed, by using sutures, and will then take out the unwanted skin and fat. The area is hereby tightened. The opening is closed, and the naval is sutured in the correct position on the abdomen.

Liposuction is also usually involved in the procedure. This is used to ensure that the abdomen has a smooth appearance. After surgery, the patient will have a dressing over the areas where the incisions were made, and may also have a compression garment. Excess fluid will be allowed to drain.

A patient may require either a full or partial tummy tuck, depending on their reason for the surgical procedure. A doctor may also need to make use of several procedures in order to accomplish the desired results, or may recommend an extended abdominoplasty. The wounds heal within one to four weeks, depending on the surgical procedure used.
