Favorite Romantic Vacations: Paso Robles Wineries

By Chris Werner

Off of Hwy 101 and not far from the Hears Castles sits a small winery town called Paso Robles. Paso Robles boasts over 200 wineries and these are some of my favorite wineries.

In the west of Paso Robles, Adelaida Cellars Inc, is spread across 145 acres of land which feature 5 unique estates that arguably produces the best wine varietals in California. Surrounded by the breeze from the Pacific Ocean, high topographies and chalk rock limestones, Adelaida has developed really well thanks to the climate. It is devoted to using more sustainable energy and methods and in 2010, Adelaida was recognized for its tremendous efforts in its environment-friendly practices.

Leading the pack is the Hoffman Mountain Ranch. Among the wineries in Paso Robles, this one has specialized in Burgundian varieties. Starting their operations in 1964, it uses its own locally grown wine grapes in producing the best Pinot Noir in the area. Even though their supply is not that much compared to the others, each sip is packed full of smooth and vibrant flavors.

Anna's Estate Vineyard was primarily an experiment before it realized that their operations is reliable and has the potential to succeed. Clone and rootstock is integration in making their wines and in turn, it has given all their blends this specific essence that has caught everyone's attention. They are very well-known for their earthy and chocolate-y flavor. Named after Elizabeth Van Steenwyk's grandmother, their Syrah wine is their specialty.

Among all the Adelaida wineries, Michael's Estate Vineyard is the only one that works with dry farm land. With its numerous different slopes and hills, it provide great source of different flavors in which the estate easily take advantage to. Among their high-quality wine varietals, their Zinfadels is truly their main focus and has ever since been revered by their guests.

Famous for their Cabernet Sauvignon, you may never guess that Viking Estate Vineyard just began in 2007. The terrain where it is on may be challenging to planting wine grapes. To compensate for it, they concentrated on certain varieties of wine such as Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah as well as Cabernet Sauvignon. By doing this, their wines are of high-standard and caused people to flock to their estate to taste it.

Built and managed by Don Van Steenwyk, Bobcat Crossing Estate Vineyard has earned the hearts and taste buds of wine enthusiasts. It is individualized in Adelaida Cellars as the sole manipulator of farming on sandy loam lands. They have managed to harvest varieties of Portuguese crops that are transformed into Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cao and Souzoa, and Muscat Blanc. Aside from that, they are also known for their single-blend techniques in wine making that brings out a fruit and acidic tang in their vino, most especially their superior Touriga Nacional.
