Golf Putting Mats - A Putting Mat Can Work If A Full Putting Green Is Too Big

By Dave Harris

If you're no different than the rest of the golf nuts, you've probably had it in your head from time to time to have a private putting green or putting mat installed at your home. Unfortunately, this just doesn't work for most average golfers; there are several factors, but most golfers simply cannot bring themselves to dedicate the space or time to put in a full putting green at their house.

It's probable they live in the city or close to it where living area is highly valued, or maybe maintaining and caring for the green is too much physical work for them to take on. However they got there, golfers under these conditions feel helpless about ever getting a golf setup at their house. They may not know, however, that a golf mat is available in all shapes and sizes which means that pretty much anyone has the space for a putting mat.

Being easy to move from place to place is another is another great thing about a golf mat that isn't true about a full sized putting green. With the smaller sized footprint of a putting mat, very little space is needed when compared to a full putting green or even to jumbo mats and are very easy to remove and put somewhere else because of their small size.

An indoor putting green is usually in a designated room planned and reserved for that purpose. After it's cut to order and put in the house, it's not at all easy to get it back out and if the game plan is to re-locate it to another room in the house it will most likely have to be re-cut to install properly. Putting greens in an outside space are almost always bigger, having been designed for a bigger space, and are heavy and awkward to move. All but the most elaborate putting mats on the other hand are small enough so that a single person can handle one. This is the best overall pick for the golfers who wants to practice but can't swing the cost or who can't maintain a regular sized putting green.

Another benefit of a personal putting mat is that it will provide most of the actual benefit to your golf game that a full sized practice green will. This is because the lion's share of your golf score is directly attributable to your putts; chipping, driving, and other setups are of course important (not that you're hitting drives at home on any setup of course), but improving that putting is the fastest way to drop your score for the overwhelming majority of golfers.

And surprise, surprise...it will be negligibly close to having exactly the same positive effect on your putting skill level than any other sized putting green would. This arises from the fact that over fifty percent of a typical golfers strokes are putting strokes, although to be good the wedge, irons and driver are also critical to practice. Obviously skill with the total bag of clubs makes up the totality of a golfer's game, but for most, putting improvement is the shortest route to lower scores.
